Funny article, and we buy travel insurance when we travel (we live abroad and certainly buy it when we return to the U.S. because Medicare is certainly a huge waste of money if you get your regular healthcare at home). But we’ve learned not to eat fresh, uncooked produce in restaurants, only that which we buy and wash ourselves. Since we have had parasitic afflictions at home in Ecuador and take an anti parasitic medication every year as a precaution (it actually seems necessary because no matter what, we seem to pick up the little buggers!), we do not desire what you went through during our travels!
I heard that it’s very easy to get tested in Mexico and South America since it’s routine. Two weeks later and im still waiting on test results though I finally found a doctor willing to prescribe Bactrim after 10 lbs of weight loss!
We don’t even bother with testing because the most common anti parasite drug, notazoxanide (Colufase) is cheap, over the counter, and broad spectrum (treats giardia and amoebas and other fresh produce parasites). If we start to feel something down there, we take the medication for three days.
So sorry you were sick! Best wishes for a full recovery, and soon. And I could not agree more about taking the heat into account. I live in Amsterdam and am spending the summer in Umbria, and both places are seriously suffering from repeated heatwaves. In an air-conditioned society like the U.S. it is easy to underestimate the huge impact heat will have on your life in so many places in Europe.
So, so sorry to hear about this! Being in Cilento and not enjoying the food and the beach is certainly disappointing. The Borgo is a beautiful place to get sick though! All kidding aside, glad you’re on the mend and your October trip will be all the more wonderful ♥️♥️
Oh no! How terrible to be sick while traveling and that Cyclospora bug is a real doozy. I was joking with my husband that I can't afford any of the weight-loss drugs but maybe I'll get the Cyclospora bug to the same effect. Hopefully you are back in the pink!
