Lovely story telling Danielle. Headed to the area in less than 3 weeks. Tenuta Vannulo was on my list but it sounds like Barlotti is more our speed. Thanks for the recommendation.
Headed to Paestum , Agropoli, and probably Salerno now early June and have already booked the Vannulo cheese farm tour. Cannot wait to meet the water buffalo. I love how you explained the history of this region. Thank you for your information!
I was somewhat captivated. Interesting history woven in with modern wit. I’ll continue to follow.
I’m traveling to northern Italy to a town named Gazzola near Piacenza. Do you have any episodes or stories about that area? And Naples is a place of ancestry too.
I have lots of podcast episodes about Naples, you can scroll through here on Substack or Apple Podcasts or Spotify. One in particular is called The Theater of Life and Death in Naples.
Hi Danielle, I really enjoyed reading your piece mixing cultural and food history - some engaging food for thought here! Having been on the mozzarella highway myself, all I thought was how to get off that road at the time. Next time I'm visiting Paestum, I'll visit the places you mentioned - they sound lovely. Ciao, Irena
I visited Paestum nearly 50 years ago on a hot autumn day. There was not a soul there, the only living thing a little snake which slithered past me when I disturbed it. An extraordinary place.
Danielle, my friends and I visited Tenuta Vannulo last fall when we were in the Cilento area, on your recommendation. Fascinating facility - and fabulous mozzarella! And Paestum was beyond belief - totally uncrowded and riveting.
We did not, but had fabulous meals throughout Cilento. Santa Maria de Castellabate, where we stayed, had many wonderful seaside restaurants. We went to Salerno and saw the Duomo with St Matthew's remains. Went one day to Palinauro and took a boat ride around the cliffs and the Blue Grotto. I highly recommend that! Ate lunch there at a place right on the beach.
Really superb stitching together of so much history and a moment of relief in doomscrolling days. So glad to have seen Paestum and Salerno. Grazie Danielle.
Enjoy?! Geek out?! Well of course! I loved this and heard it at dawn this morning. Keep up this kind of thinking - far better to read and listen to you than to the real news. I have been wanting to share some SS writers with you and will do so, in case you do not know them. Can’t wait for the day you tell us more about Sicily.
Excellent explanation and weaving of historical facts with delightful humor and knowledge ! Grazie cara Danielle!
Thank you for the kind words!

You can always go to Vannulo just for the gelato. The cafe is lovely.

From Paestum all the way down the coast from there, it’s paradise. The Cilento is spectacular.

Ah I need a full report of your Cilento trip! Did you make it to Borgo La Pietraia for dinner?

Thanks, Nobina. Whenever I get geeky, I think, "Well, at least I know Nobina will enjoy it."
